Nearly 80% of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in the home. Are you prepared to help a loved one if the need arises?
It is a situation none of us want to face. When someone collapses from a heart attack or sudden cardiac arrest, every second counts. You could be that person's only chance for survival.
No one knows this better than David Schatzer whose life was saved by his wife Marian when she found him unresponsive.
Marian remembers, "I don't know what came over me, but I found the strength to lift my husband out of his chair and get him to the ground where I could begin CPR. I called 9-1-1 and opened the front door so the rescuers could get in. All of this happened within seconds. The paramedics arrived and defibrillated his heart several times trying to restore a normal heartbeat before transporting him to the hospital.
"It was so scary, but at least I knew I was doing everything I could to keep David alive. I can't imagine what it would have felt like to stand by and watch him die. If I have learned anything it is that everyone needs to learn CPR."
