Like most people, Jamie always thought pacemakers “were for much older people.” Even after suffering two fainting spells at home, she never dreamed that she would have a pacemaker implanted at the young age of 29.
Her second fainting spell resulted in a trip to the ER for the active mother of a 2-year old, where, she was kept overnight for observation. Heart monitors showed an alarming pattern. Her heart was stopping for several seconds at a time. Jamie says, “I believe I am here on this earth for a reason. If they had not kept me overnight, I may still not know what was going on, or worse yet, I may not even be here to share my story.” Additional tests confirmed that her condition would require a pacemaker to regulate her heart rhythm.
While there are many common misconceptions about heart disease, Jamie’s story proves that heart conditions have no age barrier. We all have to be vigilant about our health and not assume that we are too young for this to happen to us.
Jamie continues to lead a very active and healthy life, including running 5Ks, 10Ks and half marathons. She is dedicated to motivating others to live healthier, happier, stronger lives.
