Just like the beloved “Fighting Chippewa” CMU teams that he faithfully supports, Brock is a fighter. He enjoys meeting competitors on the soccer field, baseball diamond and golf course. But his biggest challenge has been facing medical issues related to a congenital heart defect.
At just 11 weeks old, he underwent the first of three heart catheterizations to stretch his aortic valve. At 3 ½, open heart surgery was necessary to repair the valve.
Brock was determined that this would not keep him from playing baseball. Brock’s dad, Jim, recalls, “We came home from the hospital after surgery, and I told Brock he wouldn’t be able to play ball for a few weeks until he was fully recovered. Brock walked down 13 steps to our basement, picked up a baseball, fired it at my head and said, ‘See Dad, I CAN play!’”
Although the surgery was successful, more procedures and another surgery down the road are an unfortunate reality for Brock. Jim knows that Brock is up for any challenge that comes his way, “He is a very passionate and loving boy and we are amazed at his strength and bravery.”
Heart disease is a scary opponent, but just like Brock, you can prevail by educating yourself and seeking medical care to manage your health. Make yourself a priority and take the time to see your doctor on a regular basis.
